Dear Michelle,
Following your email of 5th June, I can confirm that information relating to the qualifications of Professor
Edzard Ernst is available on the website of the Peninsula Medical School at:
http://www.pms.ac.uk/compmed/ernst.htm. This site confirms that Professor Ernst has a MD and PhD, in
addition to this information I can confirm that these qualifications were both obtained from Ludwig
Maximilian University, Munich, in 1978 and 1987 respectively.
With regard to the basic criteria needed for the role of Laing Chair, the following is an extract from the
further particulars related to the role:
“The New Professor
The new professor will co-operate with the other staff of the Centre and will, in particular:
a. provide academic leadership in developing within the Centre a formal research programme into
the techniques and effectiveness of the various branches of complementary medicine from a
position of personal experience of, or involvement in, at least one of them,
b. Encourage the assimilation of appropriate techniques into orthodox medicine,
c. Provide leadership within the national scene in the teaching of complementary medicine to
graduate clinicians and medical undergraduates,
d. Contribute to the further development of a comprehensive information service available to all
professionals using complementary medicine,
e. Assist in the expansion of the existing programme of workshops and conferences, in the
dissemination of information, and in the education of professionals and the lay public,
f.
Participate in the appointment of additional members of staff to an enlarged team to expand the
programme of work currently undertaken in the Centre.
The Candidate
The successful candidate will be a registered practitioner, and the University in making an appointment,
will be looking for:

an established academic reputation in research
-
a familiarity with orthodox medical practice and medical education in the UK
-
the ability to speak for complementary medicine to government, to the public, and within the
University
-
teaching experience
-
established contacts within the field of medicine and the field of complementary health
-
preparedness to assist the University in its commitment to raise an additional £1.5m for the further
development of the Centre”
