Dear Mr Ashby
Request for Information – Final Response
Further to the acknowledgment we sent to you on 28 January 2009 to your request for
information about RN Flag Officers and Admirals of the Fleet, I am now in a position to
forward a substantive response to your query.
Please find attached a table containing a list of all 2 star RN officers i.e. of Rear Admiral
and above. Recent changes in the organisation of the Naval Service have meant that a
number of the old RN Flag Officers, such as FO Submarines and FO Surface Flotilla no
longer exist, and a complete list of all actively serving Naval Officers of Rear Admiral and
above, and their appointments, as requested, is provided.
I also, as requested, list below the holders of the rank of Admiral of the Fleet:
HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh KG KT OM GBE AC QSO
Adm of the Fleet Sir Edward Ashmore GCB DSC
Adm of the Fleet Sir Henry Leach GCB DL
Adm of the Fleet Sir Julian Oswald GCB
Adm of the Fleet Sir Benjamin Bathurst GCB DL
I hope this information fully answers your request.
If you are unhappy with this response or you wish to complain about any aspect of the
handling of your request, then you should contact me in the first instance. If informal
resolution is not possible and you are still dissatisfied then you may apply for an
independent internal review by contacting the Director of Information Exploitation, 6th Floor,
MOD Main Building, Whitehall, SW1A 2HB (e-mail [email address] ). Please note that
any request for an internal review must be made within 40 working days of the date on
which the attempt to reach informal resolution has come to an end.
If you remain unhappy following an internal review, you may take your complaint to the
Information Commissioner under the provisions of Section 50 of the Freedom of
Information Act. Please note that the Information Commissioner will not investigate the
case until the internal review process has been completed. Further details of the role and
powers of the Information Commissioner can be found on the Commissioner’s website,
http://www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk .
Yours sincerely
Mike Demetriou
