Dear Mr Sittampalam

Freedom of Information request – RFI20080551

I refer to your emails of 2nd and 9th June 2008; my apologies for the delay in responding. We note
the points raised in your email. As you are aware, we have now appealed the Information
Commissioner’s decision that information regarding the costs of production of programmes is
covered by the Act.

In your email of 9th June, you clarified your request for “any available breakdowns” as follows:

“what I do want to see are the totals under whatever headings you normally classify this expenditure
[the
£45.4m spent on marketing, press & publicity]… the total amounts the BBC spends in specific areas”

As we consider this information is not covered by the Act, we do not believe that we are obliged
to make available any breakdowns. As mentioned before, if you do not agree that the information
is not covered by the FOI Act, you do have the right to appeal to the Information Commissioner.
The contact details are:  Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane,
Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF, telephone 01625 545 700 or see
www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk

Having said that, we are happy to volunteer the following information, outside the scope of the
Act and without prejudice to that position.

The £45.4m spend can be broken down into:

Central marketing, communications and audience services - £24.3m
Journalism - £4.8m
Future Media and Digital - £3.4m
Audio and Music - £4.2m
Vision - £8.7m

Total - £45.4m

Yours sincerely,
