Dear
Mr
Jarman

Reference No: 01/09

Further to my letter dated 6 January 2008 I write in connection with your
request for information concerning;

1) How many former officers of the Surrey Police force are currently in receipt
of an injury award pension, as provided for in the Police Pensions
Regulations 1987 and the Police (Injury Benefit) Regulations 2006?

 2) Do you operate a policy of reducing an injury award pension to the
lowest permissible band when the former officer reaches the age of 65?

3) In the years 2004 to 2008 inclusive, how many former officers’ injury award
pensions were reduced to the lowest banding upon the former officer
reaching the age of 65? (A total figure only is requested, but I have no
objection if you break the figures down by year)

 4) In the years 1987 to 2003 inclusive, how many former officers’ injury award
pensions were reduced to the lowest banding upon the former officer
reaching the age of 65? (A total figure only is requested, but I have no
objection if you break the figures down by year)

 5) In the years 2004 to 2008 inclusive, how many formal complaints have
been made against officers of ACPO rank in the Surrey Police force
regarding matters in any way connected with the administration of reviews
of police injury awards? (A total figure only is requested, but I have no
objection if you break the figures down by year)

I have considered your request and found in favour of disclosure. Below is the
information you request.

1) There are currently 179 people in receipt of an Injury on Duty Award.

2) The Authority's policy with regards to review of Injury Awards is set out in
the attached document which was approved in September 2006. The protocol
seeks to implement the HO guidance including the recommendation that the
norm will be that post 65 a recipient’s award will be reduced to Band 1, unless
there are exceptional reasons why this should not happen (e.g. financial
hardship).

3) The Authority is currently reviewing the injury awards paid to those over the
age of 65, of whom there are currently 25. No reductions have yet been
implemented but will be with effect from February 2009.

4) None

5) None

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in Surrey
Police Authority.

Yours sincerely
