Dear Mr. Jarman,
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST 285/2009
I write in connection with your request for information received by Kent Police on the 13th
January 2009. I am very conscious that this response finds you some time after the statutory
time limit permitted to a public authority for dealing with requests has passed and for this
failure in our service I apologise.
I note that you seek access to information, in summary, relating to officers in receipt of injury
award pensions.
Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted within Kent Police to locate the
information relevant to your request and I can respond as follows:
Question 1. How many former officers of the Kent Police force are currently in receipt of an
injury award pension, as provided for in the Police Pensions Regulations 1987 and the Police
(Injury Benefit) Regulations 2006?
Answer: At this time 409 retired officers are in receipt of an injury award pension. Kent Police
records regarding this date back to 1976. However it is possible that some pensions may have
begun prior to this date.
2) Do you operate a policy of reducing an injury award pension to the lowest permissible band
when the former officer reaches the age of 65?
Answer: Kent Police do not reduce the injury award pensions to the lowest permissible band
when the former officer reaches age 65.

reduced to the lowest banding upon the former officer reaching the age of 65? (A total figure
only is requested, but I have no objection if you break the figures down by year).
Answer: Kent Police do not reduce the injury award pensions to the lowest permissible band
when the former officer reaches age 65 and therefore the answer to this question is ānot
applicableā.
4) In the years 1987 to 2003 inclusive, how many former officers? Injury award pensions were
reduced to the lowest banding upon the former officer reaching the age of 65? (A total figure
only is requested, but I have no objection if you break the figures down by year).
Answer: Kent Police do not reduce the injury award pensions to the lowest permissible band
when the former officer reaches age 65 and therefore the answer to this question is ānot
applicableā.
5) In the years 2004 to 2008 inclusive, how many formal complaints have been made against
officers of ACPO rank in the Kent Police force regarding matters in any way connected with the
administration of reviews of police injury awards? (A total figure only is requested, but I have
no objection if you break the figures down by year).
Answer: No complaints have been received against officers of ACPO rank in this time period.
The force policy surrounding injury award pensions is detailed in L80 Injury Awards: The
