Dear Mr Urquhart

Re: Freedom of Information Request

Thank you for your request for information dated 05 January 2009 which we have provided under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

You requested the following information:

  1. The number of Council owned or rented homes that are fitted with

solar panels, or passive solar heating technology

  1. The number of Council properties other than homes that are fitted with solar panels or passive solar heating technology

  1. The percentage of the Council's energy consumption that is derived from renewable sources, and details of the suppliers with whom the Council is contracted to provide that energy.

In response to your request I have numbered the responses in the order that you have presented them.

  1. The only Council owned block with solar panels at present is Lea View House also only a small amount of maisonettes have this facility. The panels provide hot water via a third tap to the basin and bath on the first floor. They were installed quite a few years ago and but on the last review were deemed to be not very effective. Planned Maintenance currently maintains the installations. Currently we are looking to install Photovoltaic Panels to some blocks on the Whiston Estate as a trial and Suffolk Estate but these works have yet to be agreed.

  1. There are no Council properties other than homes that are fitted with solar panels or passive solar heating technology.

  1. The Council does not have a percentage figure of their energy consumption that is derived from renewable sources, and thus no details of the suppliers with whom the Council is contracted to provide that energy. However the Council do plan to install 30kWh of Photovoltaic Panels on a current new build office (completion Dec 2009), and are investigating a potential provision of 5MWh of wind turbine electricity, within the next three years.

Yours sincerely
