In November 2008 a list of around 13,000 names and home addresses alleged to be members of the British National Party were posted on an internet website. This list (hereafter referred to as 'The List') was alleged to list the details of serving members of various UK Police Forces. Therefore under the Freedom of Information Act (2000), I request the following information:

RESPONSE

Can you let me know if any department of Merseyside Police, specifically the Human Resources / Personnel Department currently has a copy of 'The List'?

Initially the Personnel & Development Department held a copy of the list for the following purposes:

  • To ensure compliance with police regulations concerning membership of the BNP

  • Protecting Officers from harm

  • Protection of the Merseyside Force in relation to the potential for corruption and/or blackmail

Can you let me know if any department of Merseyside Police, specifically the Human Resources / Personnel Department has

previously held a copy of 'The List', acquired on or after November 17 2008, but has subsequently destroyed 'The List'?

Personnel & Development no longer hold a copy of the list. However, it is now held by a different department for a different policing purpose of conducting an ongoing investigation. In accordance with Data Protection, we are not obliged to keep the information for any longer than is necessary for the purpose for which it is held. The list will be destroyed when that purpose comes to an end.

If the answer to question 1) or 2) above indicates that Merseyside Police currently has, or previously had, a copy of 'The List', can you please detail how 'The List' came to be in your possession. In other words, how did the Merseyside Police physically acquire either the electronic or physical 'hard copy' copy of 'The List'?

The copy of the list was extracted from the Internet.
