DISCRETIONARY HOUSING PAYMENT VISITS
The Council's DHP policy states that the assessment for eligibility for DHP should be made by the relevant Benefit Supervisor in conjunction with the findings of the Visiting Officer's home visit to the applicant.
The reason for the home visit is twofold.
To confirm the expenditure outlined by the applicant in his/her application. This is particularly important given that applicants may exaggerate the level of their expenditure in order to maximise their chances of being awarded DHP. It is vital therefore, that the visiting officer obtains as much documentary evidence as possible to corroborate any claimed expenditure.
To see if the applicant's general living standards and home circumstances are consistent with the claims made on the application form.
In view of the fact that the applicant may be suffering hardship and that their security of tenure may be at risk, it is essential that these visits are carried out quickly.
