First of all may I take this opportunity to apologise for the delay in responding to your Freedom of Information request.

Thank you for your e-mail dated 28th November 2008, in which you sought information relating to the following from the Ministry of Justice:

  1. How many prisoners money is held whilst they are in prison?

  2. Where previous money is held (i.e. in what type of account)?

  3. Whether any interest is obtained on the account in which the cash is held?

  4. How much money, in total, is held by the Prison service on behalf of serving prisoners?

I am writing to inform you that unfortunately we will be unable to provide the information you are seeking within the required time. I hope to let you have a response by Monday 9th February 2009 or sooner.
