Mr Leroy Curtis

Dear Mr Curtis,
Thank you for your e-mail of 22/11/2008 2:01:48 AM about car thefts.
Information on the number of cars stolen in England, Scotland and Wales in the years 2006 and 2007 is not currently available from Home Office sources. As you may be aware, the Home Office Car Theft Index publications provide this information for a number of years prior to 2006, however, this publication has not been refreshed for years beyond 2006.
An alternative source of information on vehicle crime is Home Office Statistical Bulletin 07/08, Crime in England & Wales 2007/08 (http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs08/hosb0708.pdf). This publication provides police recorded crime data for Home Office offence code 48 (theft or unauthorised taking of motor vehicle) for England & Wales, as follows:
The definition of the data in the table above differs from that included in the Car Theft Index publications in two important ways:
Police recorded crime data covers England and Wales only. Data for Scotland is available from

Police recorded crime data includes thefts of all motor vehicles, including, for example, vans and lorries. Car Theft Index data includes only cars.
Yours Sincerely,
