Mr Bob Willis
[FOI #40989 email]

28 July 2010

Dear Mr Willis

Request for Information – RFI20100923

Thank you for your email of 8 July 2010 in which you seek clarification of wording used in the BBC’s
response to Freedom of Information Act (“FOI”) request RFI20100748.  Your query has been dealt with as
a request for information under the FOI Act.

In RFI20100748 the BBC noted that “…TV Licensing enquiry officers, on average, catch 1,000 evaders per day so
make a considerable number of visits daily on a nationwide basis
.”

You have asked that the word ‘catch’ be defined.  An evader is caught where they are found to require a
TV Licence and a prosecution statement is then taken.  A prosecution statement is where TV Licensing has
interviewed the evader under caution.
