The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has been notified by ………… Police of an offence in connection with the illegal display of the above registration mark.

You should be aware that registration numbers are not items of property in their own right. They are assigned by the Secretary of State as a unique means of identifying a vehicle for taxation and law enforcement purposes and will be withdrawn if abused. Registration numbers must be displayed in accordance with the requirements prescribed by the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. The specifications are outlined in the enclosed leaflet Display of Registration Marks (V796).

I must inform you that you should change your number plates without delay to meet the prescribed specifications and provide me with photographic evidence that this has been done. If you fail to do so within 21 days from the date of this letter, the above registration number will be withdrawn permanently from use by virtue of section 23 of the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994. The vehicle will be re-registered under an alternative mark. No compensation of any kind will be paid.

The DVLA has a duty to ensure that number plates are legitimately supplied by businesses that are registered with the DVLA. We ask that you notify us from which vendor you purchased the number plate. The DVLA will then independently contact the supplier to ensure that they comply with their legal obligations. Please supply the information requested within 21 days to RNPS, Zone 3, D16, DVLA, Swansea SA6 7JL, or alternatively telephone 0870 600 1016.
