To whom it may concern;
I am writing with reference to your request for information regarding the size and
scope of the National ANPR Database, dated 6th June 2010.
Under Section 8 of the Freedom of Information Act, you are required when
submitting a request, to provide a name and address for correspondence. Further
guidance from the Information Commissioners Office clarifies this as your full name
(see link below). As you have not submitted your full name, this is not a valid
request under the Freedom of Information Act.

However, the guidance also suggests that a public authority should still consider
dealing with the request even though it is not valid. On this occasion, the request
has been dealt with in accordance with current FOIA legislation.
You asked for the following information:
How many fixed cameras feed information into the NADC database
Which organisations (Highways Agency, Police Forces, etc) supply
ANPR read data to the NADC
Which organisations (Highways Agency, private companies, etc) allow
their cameras to be tasked for the purposes of providing data for
the NADC database.
How many 'read' hits are there. For example, how entries on the
NADC's database are there of a car passing an ANPR camera site.
How long is ANPR read data routinely recorded for.

In response to your request we can provide you with the following information:
How many fixed cameras feed information into the NADC database
The number of cameras feeding data to the National ANPR Data Centre (NADC)
varies on a daily basis. Over the last 7 day period (3rd June 2010 – 9th June 2010),
the NADC has received data from 4,045 cameras. We do not hold information on
the breakdown between fixed and mobile cameras.
Which organisations (Highways Agency, Police Forces, etc) supply ANPR read data
to the NADC
The NADC is supplied ANPR data only by police forces.
Which organisations (Highways Agency, private companies, etc) allow their cameras
to be tasked for the purposes of providing data for the NADC database
All data held in the NADC is provided by police forces, and we do not hold
information on which organisations' ANPR cameras have provided data to those
forces. However, we understand that some forces operate cameras jointly with local
authorities for the purposes of crime investigation and detection.
How many 'read' hits are there. For example, how entries on the NADC's database
are there of a car passing an ANPR camera site
There are currently 7.6bn read records stored in the NADC.
How long is ANPR read data routinely recorded for
ANPR read data is stored only for as long as is operationally necessary and not
routinely more than two years.
Yours sincerely,
Andy Woodgate
