Dear Mr Taylor,

Request for information RFI/02173

Thank you for your email dated 4th June 2010 in which you asked:

The following is from one of your own documents - "There are particular problems in the Thames Gateway area with its limited river crossing points. A problem on any of these crossings has a severe effect on traffic flows and journey reliability, not only for those crossing the river, but also east/west flows."

It is bad enough now trying to get through the Blackwall Tunnel. What measures will be put in place to attempt to avoid gridlock during the Olympics?

The Council is working closely with the Olympic Delivery Authority and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games in seeking the optimal transport arrangements in the borough over the Olympics and Paralympics Games period in 2012.

The planning applications for the venues at Greenwich Park and Royal Artillery Barracks only received permission on the basis of a number of planning conditions being met including many around transport provision.

The Olympic Delivery Authority is developing solutions to these challenges currently and not all details have yet been designed or agreed but the affect of the Olympic Games on normal movement of traffic in the borough will be minimised.

Clearly the benefits of the Olympics to the borough are substantial in terms of legacy, and this needs to be taken into account in terms of the overall impact of the event.

It is not possible to add more detail at present but the detailed plans are likely to be available in the late summer/early autumn this year.

If you have any queries about this letter, please contact me. Please remember to quote the reference number above in any future communications.
