Dear Ms Davis
Freedom of Information Act 2000: public sector pay schemes
Thank you for your enquiry dated 10 October 2008, which we received on 13th
October 2008. I am treating your request under the Freedom of Information Act
2000.
2. You asked for:
“a list of all performance-related pay schemes in the public sector, the categories of
staff (ie job titles) to which they apply, the approximate numbers of staff in each such
category, and the total percentage of public sector employees covered by such
schemes”.
3. HM Treasury is responsible for overall public sector pay policy. However this
responsibility does not extend to the detailed operation of individual pay structures,
and therefore HM Treasury does not hold the information you have requested.
Individual departments are responsible for holding workforce information and data on
organisations related to their departments. Information on each individual workforce
would therefore need to be sought from the primary department concerned.
4. I am sorry that I cannot be more helpful. However, given your interest in this area
you may wish to be aware that in November 2007, the Office of Manpower
Economics, who provide a secretariat function to Pay Review Bodies, published a
review on performance pay in the public sector that can be found at;
http://www.ome.uk.com/downloads/Performance%20pay%20in%20the%20Public%2
0Sector.%20A%20review%20of%20the%20issues%20and%20evidence.pdf
If you have any queries about this letter, please contact us. It will be helpful to us if
you remember to quote the reference number above in any future communications.
