Mr J H G Allen

via e-mail:

[FOI #3302 email]

Dear Mr Allen

Request for Information - Civilian Ministry of Defence

Thank you for your email, dated 4th November 2008, clarifying the nature of your request. This has been considered to be a further request for information in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI 2000). Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding.

Your initial request: The number of Civil Servants employed by the Ministry of Defence, either directly, part time or under contract.

Clarified as:

“x” full time employees; “x” part time employees and “x” under contract or working under license

The reference http://www.dasa.mod.uk/UKDS2008/c2/table232.html of the Defence Analytical Services & Advice (DASA) website details the most up-to-date information on the makeup of the civilian workforce. (Copied to annex `A'). The full time / part time split is detailed as requested and also you may find the sex, previous years and employment grade information useful. Also, as I have previously stated, the full DASA website can be located at- www.dasa.mod.uk/

Unfortunately, the requested data re `under contract' and `working under license' is not available from centrally held sources.

I trust that this information meets your requirements. If you are unhappy with this response or you wish to complain about any aspect of the handling of your request, then you should contact me in the first instance.  If informal resolution is not possible and you are still dissatisfied then you may apply for an independent internal review by contacting the Director of Information Exploitation, 6th Floor, MOD Main Building, Whitehall, SW1A 2HB (e-mail [email address]).

Please note that any request for an internal review must be made within 40 working days of the date on which the attempt to reach informal resolution has come to an end.

If you remain unhappy following an internal review, you may take your complaint to the Information Commissioner under the provisions of Section 50 of the Freedom of Information Act. Please note that the Information Commissioner will not investigate the case until the internal review process has been completed. Further details of the role and powers of the Information Commissioner can be found on the Commissioner's website, http://www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk.

Yours sincerely
