Dear Mr Hambly
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NUMBER 0215/2010
I refer to your request for information dated 20 March 2010, which was received by
Strathclyde Police on that date. Your request has now been considered and on 22 April 2010,
a decision was made to grant your request in full.
Could you please advise the number of convictions or warnings for speeding issued as a
result of information from the Average Speed Cameras fitted on the A77 Between Maybole
and Symington in either direction for the the years 2008, 2009 and 2010 to date.
Your request for information has now been considered and I can advise you that Strathclyde
Police does not hold the information requested by you. In terms of Section 17 of the Act, this
letter represents a formal notice that information is not held.
By way of explanation the SPECS Average Speed Camera System on the A77 runs between
Bogend Toll (North of Ayr) to Ardwell Bay (South of Girvan). Contraventions of the speed
limit detected by the SPECS system are progressed by means of a Conditional Offer of Fixed
Penalty being issued to the offender. Where an offender does not comply with the terms of
the fixed penalty notice a report is sent to the Procurator Fiscal to progress a prosecution
through the courts. Strathclyde Police are not routinely informed of disposals in relation to
any of these matters which are referred to the Fiscal and therefore do not hold information on
convictions. Warnings are not issued in respect of contraventions detected by the SPECS
system.
By way of assistance, the statistics shown overleaf provide the number of Conditional Offers
of Fixed Penalty issued in relation to contraventions of the speed limit detected by the SPECS
system in the years that you have stipulated. They also provide the number of Conditional
Offers which have been paid.
