Mid
Scotland Leadership Course 2010 – Thank You
I
wanted to say thanks again for giving us your time and valued input to the
‘Power and Influence’ session on Friday. This was the 3rd
of the 6 days of the Course (one day per month) which concludes in June.
Thank
you for being so open both in your remarks and in answer to questions. The
participants found your session powerful, intriguing and thought-provoking as
can be seen from below:
“Enjoyed
the insights.” “Great session.” “Has helped me to
consider some of the wider issues in relation to leadership learning.”
“Really interesting discussions and excellent range of inspirational and
passionate speakers.” – just some of the feedback from the
participants on the day.
You
asked for a little more information on some of our customised work.
Collaborative
Partnerships: Since
the mid 90s, Common Purpose has tried, tested and perfected Collabs
(Collaboration Laboratories). These are run over either one or two days, and
they provide participants with a tailored case study based on a problem that
closely reflects reality and calls for collaboration across multiple
boundaries. The Collab is run with a diverse group of leaders who are all
involved - directly or indirectly - in the problem. We mix them up, challenge
them to build partnerships, distract them with unseen issues and push them to
give feedback. We give them real local advisors from the different sectors so
that they can check against reality. All in all, we throw them into the
realities of collaboration and draw out the learning and actions.
Outcomes:
Collab participants
·
Deepen
their understanding of place and the silos within it.
·
Discover
how other organisations relate to theirs - and vice versa.
·
Find
there are different ways to do things and that people in other sectors aren't
all bad.
·
Figure
out how they themselves have to change to work with others.
·
Build
new relationships with stakeholders they had never previously considered.
Customised ‘in-house’ Leadership
Development: It is
very clear that the challenges being faced by organisations are interconnected
– and fragmented - like never before. We design and deliver customised
programmes for organisations that need their leaders and teams to:
·
Explore,
challenge and build innovation into their working practices.
You
already have a number of strands running in the internal leadership development
of your senior management team. What can add value and synergy to that? Some
possibilities to consider:
·
Common
Purpose can set up and organise immersion experiences for your staff to tackle
real life challenges in other organisations (i.e. in the NFP). This
facilitates people’s learning in unfamiliar territority and different
contexts.
·
Common
Purpose can arrange ‘in-house’ leadership development experiences
– always with our unique cross-sectoral inputs and focussed on
adaptability, using diversity, and broadening vision – of anything from 2
to 5 days in length. These are set up after discussion to ensure they fit with
key organisational objectives and priority developmental needs.
·
Sutton Council: We helped the Sutton Council Senior
Management Team to evaluate the challenges facing Sutton going forward, and
explore what kind of leadership behaviours will enable them to continue to be a
top performing Council and drive through efficiencies.
I’m
happy to meet and talk about what type of intervention would be of most use to
you and the Council.
All
good wishes,
Connie

Who in your organisation or team is
recognised as a 'rising star' - one of tomorrow's Leaders? Applications are
being taken for the 2010 Scotland International-Navigator course (runs April to
June) - for early career, 'emerging talent' individuals who
need to understand more fully about the challenges of change and leadership.
Who will benefit by early exposure to a diversity of leaders at the top of their
fields from across Scotland.
We are also taking applications for our
2-day Profile programmes in Aberdeen (1st & 2nd June), Edinburgh ( tbc ) ,
and Glasgow (8th & 9th June) - for senior people who
need to refresh or establish contacts and get a current briefing from local
leaders on the key issues, players, challenges and opportunities of the place.
Due to demand we have also opened the
application process for the 2011 Glasgow Metropolitan Region leadership
development course. Common Purpose goes beyond standard
leadership models and learns instead from the successes and failures of leaders
from all sectors.
Common
Purpose gives people the inspiration, skills and connections to become better
leaders at work and in society.
