Dear Mr Black,

Thank you for your requests under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (“the Act”) received on 17
September 2008, seeking information in relation to staff in World Service News & Current Affairs
(WSNCA).  For ease of reference we are responding to all 3 requests in this letter.

1.  What proportion of staff at World Service News and Current Affairs identify themselves as
being from an ethnic minority?
What proportion of those people received bonuses this year?
How does this compare with the number of bonuses awarded to those at WSNCA who have not identified
themselves as coming from an ethnic minority?

2.  Please could you let me know what proportion of staff at World Service News and Current
Affairs are women?
What proportion of women working at WSNCA got bonuses this year?
What proportion of men at WSNCA got bonuses this year?

3.  Please could you let me know what proportion of members of staff at World Service News
and Current Affairs work part-time?
What proportion of part-time workers at WSNCA were given bonuses this year?
How does this compare with the number of full-time workers at WSNCA who were given bonuses?

Please find below the information you requested relating to staff within WSNCA who were eligible for this
year’s general pay review.

1.  It is not mandatory for staff to inform the BBC of their ethnicity, therefore our figures only relate to
records where the ethnicity is known (currently 96% of the workforce).  The figures also exclude Local
Recruits (staff who are recruited and work locally, outside the UK).

Ethnicity statistics are calculated by comparing the number of ethnic minority staff (non-white) with the
number of ethnic majority staff (white).

Of the 49 staff from an ethnic minority background, 14 received bonuses – this constitutes 29% of the
ethnic minority population.  This compares to 32% of staff from an ethnic majority background.

2.  In response to part 2 of your request, please find below the bonus information broken down by gender:
