Dear Mr James

SUBJECT: Freedom of Information Request

Thank you for your email of 29th March, regarding my response to your Freedom of Information request, in which you asked for the following information from the Ministry of Justice:

The number of reported crimes of treason which have been reported within the UK from the year 1970 up until the present day.

Could you provide me with the dates these crimes were reported, and a list of police forces who investigated/failed to investigate them.

I can confirm that the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) does not hold any information on reported crimes of treason. You may wish to contact the police as they may hold the information you are seeking. I have provided the website for the police force areas which is as follows:

http://www.police.uk/forces.htm

It may be helpful if I explain that the Ministry of Justice holds information regarding convictions. You may wish to request, for example, the number of defendants proceeded against for offences of treason; however, please be aware that this will not be the number of “reported crimes” - only those that resulted in court proceedings. To avoid engaging the cost limit as outlined in section 12 of the FOIA 2000, (The cost limit is set at £600, which represents one person spending 3.5 working days in locating, extracting and collating the information being requested ) you may also wish to consider reducing the timeframe of your request.

I am sorry that on this occasion I have not been able to be of more assistance. As part of our obligations under the FOIA, the Ministry of Justice has an independent review process. If you are dissatisfied with this decision, you may write to request an internal review. The internal review will be carried out by someone who did not make the original decision, and they will re-assess how the Department handled the original request.

If you wish to request an internal review, please write or send an email to the Data Access and Compliance Unit within two months of the date of this letter, at the following address:
