I am writing in response to your request made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000
(FOIA) which was received on 11th February 2010.
I have responded to your questions in the order you have raised them.
You asked for the data or latest estimates on:
1.1 The total number of vehicle records that we hold.
This information is held. As at 30th September 2009 there were 34,395,400 licensed vehicles
on the DVLA database.
1.2 Our most recent statistics for, or estimates of, the percentage of vehicle records that
are correct in every respect.
This information is held. Our most recent estimate of the percentage of vehicle records that
are correct in every respect is 88.60 %
1.3 Our most recent statistics for, or estimates of, the percentage of vehicle records that
contain errors.
This information is held. Our most recent estimate of the percentage of vehicle records that
contain errors is 11.4 %
1.4 Our most recent statistics for, or estimates of, the percentage of vehicle records that
contain errors sufficiently serious that you cannot contact the vehicle's registered
keeper.
This information is held. The most recent statistic on the percentage of vehicle records where
the registered keeper of a vehicle cannot be traced from the details held on the DVLA record
is 4.3 %.

1.5 Our most recent statistics for, or estimates of, the percentage of vehicle records that
contain errors that originate within DVLA, including data-entry errors by your
staff.
This information is held. Our most recent estimate on the percentage of vehicle records that
contain errors where the error originated within DVLA is 2.7% .
1.6 Our most recent statistics for, or estimates of, the percentage of vehicle records that
contain errors that originate from incorrect information submitted by vehicle
owners and keepers, or from their failure to inform you of relevant changes in the
vehicle's details.
This information is held. Our most recent estimate on the percentage of vehicle records that
contain errors that originate from incorrect information submitted by registered vehicle
keepers is 1.18%, and where the registered vehicle keepers has failed to update DVLA with a
change of details as 7.52%.
1.7 Any other statistics that we hold about the accuracy of DVLA vehicle records.
Whilst this information is held, is it exempt by virtue of section 22 of the FOIA information
intended for future publication. Attached at Annex A are the full reasons why DVLA favours
withholding the information until its publication. The 2009/10 annual Traceability Survey
closed for responses at the end of January 2010. The results are being analysed and will be
reported to the Secretary of State in March. We intend to publish the results of the survey in
the next 2 months.

This information is held. As at 14th December 2009 there were 43,958,637 Driver records on
the DVLA database.
2.2 Our most recent statistics for, or estimates of, the percentage of driver records that
are correct in every respect.
This information is held. Our most recent estimate of the percentage of driver records that are
correct in every respect is 73.82 %.
2.3 Our most recent statistics for, or estimates of, the percentage of driver records that
contain errors.

contain errors is 26.18 %.
2.4 Our most recent statistics for, or estimates of, the percentage of driver records that
contain errors sufficiently serious that you cannot contact the driver concerned.
This information is held. The most recent statistic on the percentage of driver records where
the driver cannot be traced from the details held on the DVLA record is 20.62 %.
2.5 Our most recent statistics for, or estimates of, the percentage of driver records that
contain errors that originate within DVLA, including data-entry errors by your staff.

contain errors where the error originated within DVLA is 2 %.

contain errors that originate from incorrect information submitted by drivers, or from
their failure to inform you of relevant changes in their details.
This information is held. Our most recent estimate on the percentage of driver records that
contain errors that originate from incorrect information submitted by the driver is 3.56%, and
where the driver has failed to update DVLA with a change of details as 20.62%.
2.7 Any other statistics that we hold about the accuracy of DVLA driver records.
Whilst this information is held is it exempt by virtue of section 22 of the FOIA information
intended for future publication. Attached at Annex A are the full reasons why DVLA favours
