Re: - Request for Information - Manchester Residency Policy

Thank you for your request for information, which was received by Manchester City Council on 1st February 2010 and has been considered under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
In response to your request, I have summarised the information as follows:-
Manchester City Council operates a Residency Policy for a limited range of jobs, namely, first point of entry clerical and lower administrative, operative, and trainee positions and this restriction is clearly stated in the job advertisement.
The restriction when applicable is defined as applicants who live within the boundary of the City of Manchester, i.e. residents (or live within a household) who pay their Council Tax to Manchester City Council.
The City Council has this policy because the rate of unemployment amongst Manchester residents is so high. Manchester also has some of the most deprived wards in the country and therefore need to ensure that local people are given an opportunity to return to work.
