Dear Mr Nunn

Local Government Ombudsman

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the Local Government Ombudsman.

The AJTC came into existence in November 2007. Its functions in respect of the administrative justice system, to which you refer, do not include keeping under review the individual institutions that constitute the system, such as government departments, ombudsmen and tribunals. (The AJTC's functions of keeping tribunals and inquiries under review are distinct and separate functions, inherited from the Council on Tribunals.) The Local Government Ombudsman (LGO) is therefore not itself under AJTC oversight. It falls within the AJTC's general purview as a component of the administrative justice system.

The AJTC has not carried out or commissioned any research into how accessible, fair and efficient the LGO is. However, the AJTC maintains links with the LGO and takes an interest in its work. The Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration (the Parliamentary Ombudsman) is a member both of the AJTC and of the Commission for Local Administration in England.

If you are unhappy with the result of your request for information, you may request an internal review within two calendar months of the date of this email by contacting:

Ray Burningham

Chief Executive

If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you have the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at:
