Dear colleague
Norwich Independent Climate Change Commission
As you know, the city of Norwich has a leading reputation for being a centre of environmental science and planning.
Norwich City Council is keen to see the city stay in the forefront of this work, and to see the city well prepared for future developments. We are therefore proposing to establish an Independent Climate Change Commission to get the views of people who live and work in Norwich on how they think Climate Change will affect their future, and what the city should be doing to prepare.
The Commission will use the evidence gathered from these local people to publish a report which will be used by Norwich City Council as a guide to the way their services are planned and delivered to maintain and improve the wellbeing of the people living in Norwich. Hopefully it will also help to stimulate ideas about how to develop a more integrated approach to climate change work across all organisations in the city.
We would be delighted if you would agree to be one of the Commissioners to drive this initiative forward, and to contribute to the research and debate. Attached to this letter are draft terms of reference, and modus operandi, for the Commission, which set out our early ideas about what the Commission might focus on, and how it might work in practice.
We plan to hold an initial scoping meeting of the Commission on Wednesday 18 November 2009. This meeting will take place in the Mancroft Room, City Hall, Norwich City Council from 14.00-17.00. We propose that this meeting will:
Discuss the role of the Commission and membership
Discuss the draft terms of reference and modus operandi
Consider the range of questions that we would like to ask experts contributors
Agree which local experts and contributors we should involve in the research.
We hope you will be interested in working with us on this exciting project. We appreciate that this is short notice for the meeting. However, if you are unable to attend we would still like to know your views. Tim O'Riordan is therefore happy to hold a telephone conversation with your prior to the 18th at a mutually convenient time. Please contact Megan Davies (details below) in the first instance. Alternatively, please feel free to nominate a substitute to attend on your behalf.
Please confirm your attendance by Monday 16 November to Megan Davies on 01603 212 237 or by emailing [email address]
Yours sincerely
