I am writing to confirm that the Department for Transport has now completed its search for the information which you requested on 9 January 2010.

There are two types of body scanners in use - millimetre wave and x-ray. There are no known health implications with millimetre wave. Some body scanners are x-ray machines, so a very small dose of radiation is involved. Previous assessments carried out by the Health Protection Agency show the risk to be negligible in comparison to background radiation dose received from naturally occurring radiation.

If you are unhappy with the way the Department has handled your request or with the decisions made in relation to your request you may complain within two calendar months of the date of this letter by writing to the Department's Information Rights Unit at:

Zone D/04

Ashdown House

Sedlescombe Road North
