Police forces in the United Kingdom are routinely required to provide crime statistics to government
bodies and the recording criteria is set nationally. However, the systems used for recording these figures
are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the crime data. It should be noted that
for these reasons this force's response to your questions should not be used for comparison purposes
with any other response you may receive.
In addition, the data in this report reflects data on the MPS crime system, which may be subject to small
changes over time

Important Information
Currently the MPS records the presence at a crime of a CCTV camera, on the electronic crime record.   It is used solely to mark the record that a
cctv was present at some location prior, during or after the crime.   The flag does not indicate if cctv footage was obtained by the investigation team
nor is the record marked to show that one particular piece of evidence solved the crime.
To produce an indication of the number of offences solved by cctv footage, it would require retrieving the paper case documentation for each crime
recorded in the MPS, and have a trained investigator read through these case notes, and determine if the case was "solved" by CCTV footage, or led
to additional evidence that resulted in the crime being cleared up, by action against an individual.
The creation of this data would take about two hours to perform per case, and given that the MPS would have recorded on average about one million
offences per year since 1999, this process would be outside cost limit.
Notes
Data extracted from the CRIS system on the 09/09/2009
Feature Codes used:
AF:
Venue within sight of CCTV
AG:
Susp/Acc not captured on CCTV for id. Purposes
AH
Susp/Acc captured on CCTV id. Possible
AI:
CCTV Defective/Broken/Poor Quality
NB: These values were only used for data prior to March 2006
Ven CCTV Options used:CA, CB, CC, CG, CH, CJ, CL, CM, CT, CV
NB: These values were only used for data from March 2006 onwards.
The feature codes were made redundant on the 24th March 2006 and the Venue CCTV codes were introduced. This change affected the
way in which these crime are being recorded so this is why there is a major difference when comparing years 06/07, 07/08, 08/09 to previous years
An offence run was done using above feature codes and VEN options, an accused run was done using above feature codes and VEN options. The CRIS
numbers were then compared and all accused that had matching CRIS numbers were returned to give the numbers for the accused table
Procedings type used: AB, AF, AS, AT, BJ, BK, CE, CR
