Dear L Barnett

Request for Information - RFI 1958 - Council newspaper

Thank you for your request for information received 4th January 2010.

As of 1st April 2009 Kennet, North Wiltshire, Salisbury and North Wiltshire District Councils and Wiltshire County Council ceased to exist and a unitary authority, Wiltshire Council, was created.

In response to your request for information, please find our officers response as follows:

  1. The name, frequency and distribution/circulation of your council newspaper (by council newspaper I mean the most frequently published newspaper or magazine intended for mass distribution covering more than one topic)

We produce a residents' magazine. This will be produced twice this financial year and is scheduled to be published seven times in 2010/2011

  1. How much it cost to produce and distribute said newspaper in the last full financial year, and how much was budgeted from council resources in the financial year 2009/2010

Gross cost for 2009/10 is approximately £71,000

Gross cost for 2010/11 is budgeted for £240,000

3. How much of that cost is offset by advertising

Advertising income for 2009/2010 is anticipated to be £8,000

Advertising income for 2010/11 is anticipated to be £35,000

4. How much of that advertising, if any, comes from external sources (i.e. not from your authority's budgets)?

All external advertising

5. Which other public sector partners pay to run advertising in your newspaper, e.g. PCTs?

Any advertising sourced from public sector partners would be on top of the figure given in answers to question 3. No target has been set in relation to this.

6. Whether recruitment advertising forms part of the advertising in your newspaper?

No

7. A copy of an editorial policy guide, if one exists, which governs the material which is placed in the newspaper, and how it is decided

Copy will be determined to ensure it is in line with the emergent corporate plan once it is agreed.

8. A copy of an advertising policy guide, if one exists, which governs what sort of advertising is suitable.

Please see attached documents: 8 RFI 1958 090807 AS income gen Policy

9 RFI 1958 090807 AS external Policy

9. The number of people employed to put your newspaper/newsletter together, including total cost and staff organisation chart

No one person is employed solely for the production of the newspaper. Time spend on its production is not fully recorded and therefore it is not possible to provide this.
