Christopher Newby made this Freedom of Information request to British Broadcasting Corporation

The request was refused by British Broadcasting Corporation.

From: Christopher Newby

8 August 2011

Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,
Please let me know approximately how much of your current
Production Spend is devoted to BBC News 24,the Today Programme and
BBC 1's news broadcasts as a proportion of the BBC's overall
production budget. Also please let me know the spend(individually
but clearly on an anonyomous basis to protect privacy of
individuals) in terms of remuneration packages for the top 20
individuals who work either in BBC 24 News, the Today Programme and
BBC1.The package must obviously include pension benefits and
expense allowances including meals,taxis etc.
Finally how many public facing employees are employed including
amongst others newsreaders,weather people,foreign
correspondents,economic,sports reporters andart correspondents.
I trust this is sufficiently specific and succinct to warrant an
urgent response.

Yours faithfully,

Christopher Newby

Dear Mr Newby,

Please accept our apologies for the further delay in responding to your
request.

The main reason for the delay in responding to your request was the fact
that the request required input from several divisions, and one member
of staff who needed to provide information went on leave just before
they were contacted for information.

We do now have a draft response to your request but we are in the
process of checking that the correct information has been provided.

We hope to be in a position to respond by close of play tomorrow.

Kind regards

Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of
Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of British Broadcasting
Corporation's handling of my FOI request '24 Hours
I am not sure why it has taken 29 working days to turn down my
request for information as it is in the public's interest to be
aware of resources committed to major sectors of programme spend
and anonymous information regarding the top 20 presenters along the
lines of Government and public companies. It also seems strange that
on 15 September in apologising for the delay I was informed it was
due to the request requiring input from several divisions which
indicated to me information would be received.

Yours faithfully,

Christopher Newby

Dear Mr Newby,

The requirement for input from more than one department was the main
reason for the delay in responding to your request, but not the only
reason. Part of the delay was also due to the fact the member of staff
from News who needed to provide information to the BBC's HR department
(to allow them to progress the request) was on leave when the request
for assistance was sent to them and then I (as the member of staff in
the FOI Team overseeing the request) was also on leave for part of that
time therefore unable to assist with progressing the request via
alternate contacts. Ordinarily responses are provided in advance of the
deadline without the need for the FOI team to intervene but in this
instance the combination of circumstances meant that involvement by this
department would have assisted in progressing the request.

Although ultimately the only information we provided to you was a link
to the published information on the BBC website about senior managers in
News, we still needed to locate information in the first instance to
identify who the most highly paid individuals were, whether they were
staff or talent, and whether information about them might already be
published (for example exact salary information about the top 107 most
senior/influential managers in the BBC is published but we would not
know if the individuals you were interested in fell into that list
without information from other departments). Therefore although the
information was not provided to you - for the reasons explained in our
response letter - time was incurred locating the information.

If you still wish us to conduct a internal review into the time taken to
respond to your request please confirm by return and we will be happy to
arrange this.

Kind regards
