Introduction and guidance

This audit tool has been developed by Richard Epps and Brenda Stannard of Thurrock Council to support schools in auditing their policy and practice for safeguarding.

Under the new Ofsted Framework, schools not meeting requirements are subject to immediate special measures, so it is vital that schools are secure that they are following all national requirements

This document is in two parts:

  1. The audit tool. This can be used by school staff and governors. It is suggested that a full audit is carried out annually, with termly updates. It can also be used by the LA if schools request an external audit. The LA will request a copy of the main annual review.

The tool also includes suggested content for the central record and tables to record key information

  1. Key document checklist

  1. Updated Guidance. The guidance informs schools on the most up to date requirements for safeguarding. This will be updated regularly

If you require further guidance or would like support with the audit, please contact Richard Epps on 07825 691161, 01375 652526 or [email address]

Guidance (To be added by Brenda)

This may be manual or electronic. If the SCR is an Excel Workbook, it may have more than one spreadsheet within it but the tabs must be clearly labelled e.g. teaching, non-teaching, volunteers, governors, supply staff. An electronic folder with different spreadsheets/workbooks does not fulfil the requirements.

The LA will be providing information in line with their responsibility as direct employer

Currently not mandatory, but evidence that Ofsted may ask for in terms of safeguarding.
