Tune In - Year of Music!
Tune In - Year of Music is a new initiative from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DSCF), running throughout this academic year. The aim is to bring together and showcase the wide range of music related experiences available to children and young people across the country and to encourage them to get involved in music - whatever their talent.
Tune In is strongly linked to Professor Susan Hallam's research findings on the power of music and its impact on the intellectual, social and personal development of children and young people.
“ Recent advances in the study of the brain have enhanced our understanding of the way that active engagement with music may influence other activities. The cerebral cortex self organises as we engage with different musical activities, skills in these areas may then transfer to other activities if the processes involved are similar. Some skills transfer automatically without our conscious awareness, others require reflection on how they might be utilised in a new situation.”
Tune In - Year of Music will provide the opportunity to bring schools, communities and families together to further enjoy the magic of new and diverse types of music.
This scheme unites children, young people, parents, carers and the music and culture sector in celebrating, extending and developing participation in music and other forms of cultural activity. It will provide a national spotlight for the superb work schools and other organisations are already doing.

Cheddar Valley Music Centre celebrate 30 years!
The Cheddar Valley Music Club is celebrating 30 years of music-making this autumn with an Anniversary Concert on Wednesday 25 November 2009 at 6.00pm in The Kings of Wessex School Hall, Cheddar.
Created in 1979, the Music Club provided young people in the Cheddar Valley area the opportunity for recreational music after school.
30 years on, activities on offer include a thriving choir, a theory group, brass band, various string groups and a percussion ensemble.
Commenting on their success, co-founder Anne Higgs said: “I am delighted to have been part of the Cheddar Valley Music Club as we celebrate our 30th anniversary - particularly in this National Year of Music. I thank all the young musicians, staff and parents who have delighted us with their talent and commitment over the years.” Tickets for the Anniversary Concert will be on sale from The Kings of Wessex School Office.
