Dear Mr Jones

Re:  Chloramine in water

Thank you for your request for further clarification regarding a letter the Health
Protection Agency (HPA) sent you on 26 November 2009.

The HPA understand that the addition of chlorine and ammonium sulphate to drinking
water results in the formation of chloramines.  There are British Standards associated
with both of these chemicals (chlorine BS EN 937:1999, and ammonium sulphate BS
EN 12123:1999).  We are not aware of a British Standard for Chloramine as it is not
directly added to drinking water.

As explained in our previous reply, we do not hold information on these British
Standards.  We suggest you direct your enquiries on the regulatory framework for
water disinfection to the Drinking Water Inspectorate.

I hope you have found this information useful, however, if you are dissatisfied with
this response and would like a copy of the HPA complaints procedure then please
contact Mr George Stafford, Complaints Manager at: Health Protection Agency, 61
Colindale Avenue, London NW9 5EQ.

Please note that you have the right to an independent review by the Information
Commissioner’s Office if a complaint cannot be resolved through the HPA complaints
procedure. The Information Commissioner’s Office can be contacted by writing to
Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire
SK9 5AF.

Please contact me if you require any further information or assistance.

Yours sincerely
