Dear Ms Styles

Freedom of Information Request No 2362 (2009)

I am now in a position to answer your request for information received on 17th November 2009.

You asked for:

1) The most up-to-date unemployment statistics for the UK and for Preston, Lancashire, including single parents claiming benefits, incapacity and jobseekers allowance claimants

Section 21 of the Act allows us to direct you to information which is already reasonably accessible to you. The Department publishes a wide range of statistics on benefit claimants and expenditure on its website www.dwp.gov.uk and on the Nomis website www.nomisweb.co.uk , which is the Office for National Statistics' official website of labour market statistics, both of which allow you to construct your own tables.

In answer to part 1 of your request, to produce statistics on how many people are currently claiming Income Support, in your requested areas, click on the following link www.nomisweb.co.uk.

This will produce figures for the number of Income support (lone parents) claimants in Preston the UK and Lancashire.

For data on Jobseekers Allowance claimants which are Lone parents, follow this link

http://research.dwp.gov.uk/asd/asd1/jsa/lone_parents/JSALP_Nov09.xls

With regard to part 2 of your request, to produce statistics on how many people are currently claiming Jobseekers Allowance, in your requested areas, click on the following link www.nomisweb.co.uk.

This will produce figures for the number of Jobseekers allowance claimants in the UK, Preston and Lancashire.

In answer to part 3 of your request, to produce statistics on how many people are currently claiming Incapacity Benefits, in your requested areas, click on the following link www.nomisweb.co.uk.

This will produce figures for the number of incapacity benefit claimants in the UK, Preston and Lancashire.

Yours sincerely,
