TORCHBEARER COMMITMENT LETTER 
FOR BEIJING 2008 OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY 

 
TO: BEIJING ORGANIZING COMMITTEE FOR THE GAMES OF THE XXIX OLYMPIAD (“BOCOG”) 
I agree, on behalf of myself or my ward (in case of a person who is to be a participant and for whom I 
have legal guardianship as a parent of a minor child or otherwise), make the following commitments and 
shall observe the terms of this Commitment, to participate in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay 

(“Torch Relay”): 
1.  I (my ward) agree to participate in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay (“Torch Relay”).  In 
consideration for the opportunity to participate in the Torch Relay, I, for myself or on behalf of my ward, 
shall observe the terms of this Commitment Letter and Beijing 2008 Olympic Torchbearer Code of 
Conduct (“Code”), other rules and policies to be adopted and all directions given with respect to Torch 
Relay, and arrangement by BOCOG and its personnel. 
2.  I (my ward) agree to, for the purpose of promoting the Torch Relay and Beijing Olympic Games, accept 
and cooperate with the BOCOG on all promotional activities.    As a torchbearer of the Torch Relay, I (my 
ward) agree that BOCOG, the International Olympic Committee, Presenting Partners, and other Interested 
Parties, may use my (my ward’s) name, image, likeness, voice, Torch Relay performance as recorded while 
engaging in the Torch Relay and reproductions thereof, and any biographical information furnished by me 
(my ward) to BOCOG. 
3.  I (my ward) shall not keep the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch unless approved by BOCOG.  Following 
completion of my segment of the Torch Relay, I (my ward) will return the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch to 
BOCOG, and the personnel will remove the fuel canister from the Torch following completion.   
4.  I (my ward) shall take the obligation to keep the confidential information, and shall not disclose any 
confidential information regarding Torch Relay Activities.   
5.  I (my ward) acknowledge that I should keep the Torch properly, and will not use it or its Imagery for any 
commercial promotion. 
6.  I (my ward) agree that BOCOG shall have the right to terminate my (my ward’s) participation in the Torch 
Relay if I (my ward) do not comply with this Agreement or engage in serious misconduct. 
7.  I (my ward) agree that the Code forms an integral part of this Commitment.    I (my ward) agree that 
BOCOG has the authority to construe any terms and conditions included in this Commitment. 
8.  By signing this Commitment, I (my ward) am confirming that I (my ward) intend to participate in the 
Relay Activities.

Code of Conduct for Torchbearers of the Beijing 2008 
Olympic Torch Relay in London   
 
All selected Torchbearers shall meet the following requirements:     

 
1.  Torchbearers must be 14 years of age or older (born before 8 August 1994) and must agree to carry the 
Olympic Flame on 6 April 2008 at a time and location in London designated by BOCOG. If the Torchbearer 
is less than 18 years of age, his/her guardian must sign the BOCOG Torchbearer Commitment letter and 
provide proof of official birth date to verify minimum age of 14 years. 
2.  Torchbearers must agree to the Code of Conduct, sign the BOCOG Torchbearer Commitment Letter and 
follow the instructions of BOCOG staff. 
3.  Torchbearers must be physically able (without causing themselves any physical harm) to complete the task 
of carrying the Olympic flame for a distance of about 250m. 
4.  Torchbearers are required to wear the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay uniform provided by BOCOG. The 
uniform should not be altered in any fashion except for sizing purposes. 
5.  The appearance of the torchbearers must not detract from the celebration of the Olympic Ideals and 
neither should it attract undue attention to the individual. Failure to meet this requirement may result in 
disqualification from participation as a torchbearer. 
6.  Selected torchbearers with special needs, including wheelchair users, will be accommodated within the 
confines of the relay. A suitable mounting device will be designed to attach the torch to the wheelchair or 
motorised scooter. Torchbearers must provide their own wheelchairs or motorised scooters, if needed, to 
complete their relay section. BOCOG 2008 must be informed in advance of the intended use of such 
apparatus. 
7.  No unauthorised accessories may be worn in the course of the relay. No costumed mascots will be allowed 
to carry the Olympic flame. 
8.  Torchbearers must run their designated legs. Torchbearers should arrive at the assigned location on time 
and should bear any transportation or other costs or expenses thus incurred. 
9.  Torchbearers will be required to go through security checks at entry and exit points to and from the relay 
event areas. They should be responsible for their personal safety and security of their property. 
10.  Torchbearers agree to be filmed, photographed or otherwise recorded during the course of the Torch Relay 
for the purposes of promoting the Torch Relay and the Olympic Movement free of charge.   
11.  No pets other than special needs companion animals are permitted to accompany Torchbearers during their 
relay legs.   
12.  No commercial or corporate advertising signs can be worn by Torchbearers.   
13.  Torchbearers cannot outwardly display any political and/or religious signs during the relay excepting 
religious head coverings and discreet religious jewellery. 
14.  Without BOCOG approval, an individual’s relay leg cannot be run by a group of Torchbearers.   
15.  In case of injury or illness whilst participating in the Torch Relay, the Torchbearer will receive relevant 
medical treatment.   
16.  BOCOG has the right to terminate Torchbearers’ participation in the Torch Relay if they do not comply with 
relevant rules. 
All selected Torchbearer shall agree to the following 
 
•  Selected torchbearers may make no substitution or transfer of award. 
•  There is no retail value associated with being a torchbearer. 
•  All local laws and regulations apply. 
•  If a minor is selected as a potential torchbearer, a parent or legal guardian must accompany the minor to 
the designated location at his/her own expense. 
•  If, for any reason, a torchbearer segment(s) cannot take place, no compensation will be provided.
