The FOI I ask of you.....and I'll be doing the same to each and every NHS hospital with a maxillofacial surgery unit.

Q What is the breakdown of orthodontic retention devices

(Essix, Hawley, bonded, etc) given to the patients who have had which

orthognathic operations and how long should each device be worn?

I can advise that we use all of the retention devices that you list in your Freedom of Information request; however, the vast majority of patients, who have also had orthognathic surgery, are currently given modified Hawley-type retainers.

It has been the practice to advise that these Hawley-type retainers are worn full-time for a minimum of 6 months, before any reduction in wear is considered; depending on the clinical situation, some patients ceased retention after about another 6 months, some after longer, others have been advised to wear these retainers at night, for life.
