Re: Funding/Tyne & Wear Anti-Fascist Association (TWAFA)

I am writing to request that you consider a continuation of the funding of £2,500.00 received by Tyne & Wear Anti-Fascist Association.

We continue to be involved in the work of the Partnership through membership of the Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour in Neighbourhoods and Hotspots group.

TWAFA continues to work in identifying and monitoring community tensions, racism and the activity of organised hate groups (the latter has been proven on many occasions to be connected with an increase in tensions, racism and criminal activity in an area), and to share this information with relevant agencies, organisations and communities, including the C/ASB group. This information will complement data from other sources (such as racist incidents statistics from the police) to provide a clear picture of hotspots.

We are also well placed to contribute to appropriate responses to such activities and tensions, with many years' experience in the field as well as knowledge of and skills in the most up-to-date approaches to anti-racism, anti-discrimination and community cohesion work. For example, we have recently re-developed a short training module around identifying and responding to extremist activity, aimed at agencies involved in enforcement. This has been delivered to the North Tyneside Neighbourhood wardens, resulting in successful information sharing over racist stickering and grafitti on a number of occasions. The training can be provided more widely to council front-line staff and to police officers (it has been delivered in the recent past to police probationers in Newcastle and the entire police force and staff in Gateshead area command).

Given the broad remit of the C/ASB group TWAFA continues to have an important role as a `champion' for tackling hate crime, i.e., ensuring that this and related issues remain on the agenda and receive the necessary attention.

In addition to this role within the Partnership, our other work within North Tyneside also continues. For example
