Cosmetic surgical procedures
Request
Are you able to tell me the number of individuals who have successfully received
funding and surgery for the following under the umbrella of Hampshire PCT:
Pinnaplasty, Rhinoplasty, Thyroid chondroplasty, Breast augmentation/reduction
Does Hampshire PCT routinely fund any of these procedures or are cases where
funding is necessary exceptionally funded?
Response
Hampshire PCT, whilst funding procedures which may come under a ‘cosmetic’ HRG (Health
Research Group) code,
does NOT fund procedures for cosmetic reasons. In addition,
many similar procedures, which are included in the wider Hampshire Information Service data
attached, go ahead for clinical reasons without prior approval being sought. Many procedures
– particularly surgical excision – are routinely carried out for reasons of clinical need.
Please find attached document providing data for surgery carried out under the umbrella of
Hampshire PCT that fall within the HRG (Health Research Group) code for “cosmetic
surgery”. NHS Hampshire is currently planning audits for excluded procedures and will be
challenging payment of those that proceeded without the PCT’s prior approval.
Of these procedures, the following numbers were individually agreed by the PCT for
exceptional clinical reasons:
Procedure
1 Sep 07- 30 Oct 09
Correction of breast
21
asymmetry/reconstruction
Breast reduction
11
Pinnaplasty
7
Rhinoplasty
0
ALL the procedures above were approved for clinical need e.g. post trauma (pinnaplasty,
breast work, rhinoplasty), post cancer surgery (breast procedures), gross congenital
abnormality (breast procedures).
Thyroid chondroplasty – There is no separate HRG coding to enable the identification of this
specific procedure and therefore Hampshire PCT does not hold relevant information.
