FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NUMBER 0834/2009 
 
I refer to your request for information dated 21 October 2009, which was received by 
Strathclyde Police on that date. Your request has now been considered and on 5 November 
2009, a decision was made to grant your request in full.  As such, the information you have 
requested is detailed below. 
 
I wish to know how many people have sued Strathclyde Police for wrongful arrest since the 
1st of January 2005 till present and the cost's incurred in defending this action. 
 
In the period from 1 January 2005 till 27 October 2009 a total of 70 claims were intimated 
against Strathclyde Police in terms of wrongful arrest.   
 
In relation to your request for the costs incurred in defending such claims I can advise that a 
total of £11,159.03 has been paid to claimants.  I would ask that you note that claims of this 
type are handled by the force’s in house solicitors and they do not calculate the time spent or 
attribute costs to work of this nature. 
 
I hope this information is helpful, however, if you are not satisfied with the way in which 
your request has been dealt with, you are entitled in the first instance to request a review of 
the decision made by the Force.  Should you wish to request such a review, please write to 
Mrs Sheena Brennan, Disclosure Manager at the above address within 40 working days of 
receiving this letter.   
 
Once informed of the Review Panel’s decision, if you are still not satisfied, then you are 
entitled to apply to the Scottish Information Commissioner within six months for a decision.
