Dear Dr Bevan

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST

Thank you for your email of 19 October in which you ask for information in relation the National Identity Scheme.

You asked:

It is being reported that approximately 2,000 people in Manchester have registered an expression of interest via direct.gov.uk for information about the launch of the ID scheme in Manchester; and 10,000 people nationally.

I should be grateful if you would provide me with figures for expressions of interest from people in:

a) Scotland;

b) Glasgow; and

c) Edinburgh.

Alternatively, if you have a complete regional breakdown of the figures across the UK, then I would be pleased to receive those figures instead.

I regret to inform you that the Identity and Passport Service does not hold the information in the format that you have requested. We currently have the data as a whole with breakdowns for Manchester, the North West of England and Greater London only.

If you are dissatisfied with this response you may request an independent internal review of our handling of your request by submitting your complaint to:

Information Rights Team
Information and Record Management Service

During the independent review the department's handling of your information request will be reassessed by members of staff who were not involved in providing you with this response. Should you remain dissatisfied after this internal review, you will have a right of complaint to the Information Commissioner as established by section 50 of the Freedom of Information Act.

I realise that this response may be a disappointment to you. However I would like to assure you that I am confident that we do not hold the information that you have requested in a readily available format.

Yours sincerely

H Reid
