course beginning in October 2011.

Please provide:
The total number of candidates who have been interviewed for the
BVSc course commencing October 2011.
The number of those candidates who have been offered places.
The number of candidates who were judged "Acceptable".
The number of candidates who were judged "Acceptable 1".
The number of candidates who were judged "Acceptable 2".
The number of candidates who were judged "Acceptable 3".
The number of candidates who were judged "Acceptable 4".
and so on down to the "Acceptable 8" category,
and the number of candidates who may have been judged
"Unacceptable".
Thank you.

Dear Mrs. Jackson,
Many thanks for the information which you have promptly supplied,
specifically that for the Bachelor of Veterinary Science
undergraduates’ course beginning in 2011 500 applicants were called
for interview, approximately 2% of these did not attend, and that
244 applicants were subsequently made offers, while 256 were not.
I would be grateful if you would advise of the titles of the
different classifications or grades into which the unsuccessful 256
applicants fell, as well as the numbers of candidates who fell into
each of those categories.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Mr. Cade,
Thank you for your email of 5^th May 2011 requesting the titles of the
different classifications or grades into which the unsuccessful BVSc
applicants fell as well as the number of candidates who feel into each of
those categories.
At the School of Veterinary Science candidates that are not offered places
on the programme are not categorised. The system we follow is quite
simple and places are offered to candidates obtaining the highest scores
at interview. So this year, 244 places were offered to the 244 highest
scoring candidates. The remaining 256 candidates were not offered a place
because their score at interview was lower than the 244 candidates who
were offered a place. There is no classification/categorising of the
students who are not offered a place. Whether a candidate’s score at
interview will result in a place being offered or not is relative to the
scores of the rest of the cohort.
If you are not satisfied with the University’s response to your request,
you may ask the University to review it. If you wish to do this, please
write to Mr. Michael Thorne, Solicitors, Legal, Risk & Compliance, The
University of Liverpool, The Foundation Building, 765 Brownlow Hill,
Liverpool, L69 7ZX, enclosing a copy of your original request and
explaining your complaint. Please include an address for correspondence.

Dear Lesley Jackson,
Thank you for your reply.
I would be grateful if you would recommend to the Veterinary
Department that in future they should divide into categories the
50% of candidates who are unsuccessful in receiving an offer of a
place, so that unsuccessful candidates may then see roughly
whereabouts they fell amongst the unsuccessful.
Please advise the Veterinary Department that it is very helpful for
students to learn, for example, whether they unfortunately fell
just below the department's cut-off line, or whether they may have
been amongst those who fell far from cut-off line, perhaps even
amongst those who received the lowest scores.
Such information helps students greatly with determining how they
stand with regard to the rest of the competition and whether or not
they should invest time and energy in applying to the department
again.
Yours sincerely,
D Cade.
