Dear Mr Taylor
I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request of 11 September on Women in Power: Milestones fact sheet.
I can confirm that unfortunately the Government Equalities Office does not hold the information that you have requested, but can state the following:
The Women in Power: Milestones fact sheet was updated in January 2008 by the Gender E quality and Policy Inclusion policy team within the Government Equalities Office. The fact sheet was not cleared by Ministers, but through internal channels and officials only.
The purpose of the fact sheet was to:
coincide with the 80th and 90th anniversaries of the `democratic' franchise of 1918 (which gave the right to vote only to women over the age of 30) and the Equal Franchise Act of 1928 (which granted women the right to vote on the same terms as men).
give the reader a snapshot of some key advances made by women in political and public life over the years
add to several fact sheets which provide information about women's journey in political and public life
support the work carried out by the Government Equalities Office around increasing diversity and representation in civic participation.
The factsheet was not intended to be comprehensive and the omission of Baroness Thatcher's name - as well as other names like Betty Boothroyd - was an oversight. We have now withdrawn the factsheet.
If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the right to ask for an internal review. You should submit an internal review request within two months of the date of receipt of the response to your original letter and you should address it to: Sue Dookun, Corporate Services Manager, 9th floor, Eland House, Bressenden Place, London SW1E 5DU [Government Equalities Office request email]
If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you have the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision. You can contact The Information Commissioner at: Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF
Yours sincerely
Gender Equality and Policy Inclusion Team
