Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your email of 2 September. Your request is not something that comes under the Freedom of Information Act. However, you have asked if judges are required to sign care orders in order to make them lawful and legal? The answer is that they do not. The Family Procedure Rules require an order made by the court to be endorsed with a court seal. The rules describe the seal `as a mark which the court puts on a document to indicate that the document has been issued by the court'. There is no requirement for the judge to add an additional signature.

I hope this clarifies the matter.

Yours sincerely,

Steve Davies
