Dear Sir

Freedom of Information Act 2000 - Request for Information

I am writing in respect of your recent enquiry for information held by the Authority under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Request

Birmingham has included national Indicator NI 8 Adult Participation in Sport in its current Local Area Agreement. Given the challenging nature of this indicator (it is measured via an independent telephone survey of 1,000 residents) can you provide any information e.g. detailed action Plans which describe the measures being taken by the authority to meet its targets for local sports participation i.e. increasing the number of adults doing sport 3 X 30 per week.

Response

The main initiative that will help to increase our NI8 performance is the Be Active scheme scheduled to be launched on 1 September 2009. The city wide scheme will offer free swimming, fitness gym, exercise to music classes, jogging and walking groups during off-peak hours for all Birmingham residents. In addition there will be local offers targeting segmented groups within the priority wards and constituencies.

The city councils Kids Swim4Free scheme has been extended to incorporate the Governments free swimming programme to include to non Birmingham children and all people over 60 years of age.

The Birmingham Half Marathon is being staged in October.

There will be greater emphasis on cycling and a number of Family Cycle days have already been held this summer.

Birmingham has successfully bid to stage the World BMX championships in 2012 and the track at Perry Barr is to be replaced with a new track.
