Dear Mr Starky,
Thank you for your e-mail of 12 August asking for information about the number of job vacancies that have been externally advertised by the Home Office. Your request has been dealt with as a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act.
This response covers Home Office headquarters, the Criminal Records Bureau and the Identity and Passport Service.
During the period 1 April 2007 to 31 March 2008, 394 job vacancies were externally advertised (i.e. outside of the civil service).
During the period 1 April 2008 to 30 June 2008, 56 job vacancies were externally advertised (i.e. outside of the civil service).
I understand that you also submitted an identical request to the UK Border Agency, who will be responding to you directly.
If you are dissatisfied with this response you may request an independent internal review of our handling of your request by submitting your complaint within two months to the address below quoting reference 10028.
