Subject: Freedom of Information request - car oval sticker: Article 20, Convention on Road Traffic 1949
From: Kaihsu Tai <[email address]>
To: FOI requests at DfT <[DfT request email]>

Dear Madam or Sir,

Background: The Convention on Road Traffic 1949 made in Geneva, the
United Kingdom being a contracting party thereof and has ratified,
provided in Article 20 that:

‘1. Every motor vehicle shall in addition to the registration
number display at the back, inscribed on a plate or on the vehicle
itself, the distinguishing sign of the place of registration of
this vehicle. This sign shall indicate either a State or a
territory which constitutes a distinct unit from the point of view
of registration. In the case of a motor vehicle drawing one or more
trailers this sign shall also be displayed at the back of the
single trailer or of the last trailer.

2. The composition of the distinguishing sign and the manner in
which it is displayed shall be as set out in Annex 4.’

In Annex 4, the familiar ‘ellipse’ or ‘oval sticker’ indicating the
country of registration for the vehicle, is specified.

Request: Could you please provide any document(s) setting out the
status and mode of implementation of this provision in English
domestic law, if you hold any such document(s)? I could not find
such a document on your website, nor on any other Government
websites I tried.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Dr Kaihsu Tai
