Brief Subject Description

Elective Home Education
|
Thank you for your recent `Freedom of Information' (FoI) enquiry. I am pleased to be able to provide you with the following information.
Your enquiry asked that we supply:
How many electively home educated children did the visiting person have concerns about suitable education was being provided?
In the academic year 2008-09, seven children were deemed to be receiving an unsuitable education by our Consultant Inspector.
Of these children how many were deemed to be not receiving any education?
Two children were deemed to be receiving no education.
Whether the philosophy of education is inadequate, where the child is not appearing to be learning enough?
None
Whether there are concerns that the family have not implemented a structured approach?
None
Whether the fact that the national curriculum is not being followed is causing concern?
None, Families are not required under current legislation to follow the National Curriculum.
If there are children in the above four categories, please indicate If further steps are being taken, such as Issuing a School Attendance Order?
No School Attendance Orders have been issued, however further steps include actively seeking and encouraging the family to return to mainstream schooling in addition to referrals to other agencies/professionals.
Please also indicate if any Education Supervision Orders are currently in court for this population?
None.
Please can you confirm whether any children who fit into the above categories of concern about educational provision suitability would also therefore be referred to Social Services?
None.
Is it possible in your Local Authority that Social Services are involved with a family but that the EHE department do not know of this involvement (This involvement would be on an on-going basis rather than a one off referral which is found to be of no concern)
This is unlikely, as Children's Social Care are notified of all pupils who are EHE within the borough.
I trust that the information above is sufficient to meet your requirements. Should any clarification of this information be required, please contact the officer whose name and details appear at the head of this response.
Should any fresh question(s) arise as a result of your enquiry, however, this/these will need to be addressed via a new FoI enquiry at [Islington Borough Council request email]
Finally, please see the footnote below which provides information about copyright, and potential re-use of information provided under the FoI legislation.
Yours sincerely,
