FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 3885/2009
I write in connection with your request for information dated 3 August 2009. I note you seek access to the following information for the period 1 January 2008 to 1 January 2009:
How many Police Constables were employed by your force?
How many of these were transfers?
How many officers were promoted to higher ranks during the above period
How many current vacancies are there within the force, and what are these
vacancies
How many officers classify themself as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender
(LGBT)
What is the current management structure of the force?
Following receipt of your request searches were conducted within Greater Manchester Police to locate information relevant to your request. I can confirm that some of the information you have requested is held by Greater Manchester Police.
Number of Police Constables (including Student Officer) in force as of the 1 January 2009 was 6500.
Of the above, 435 were transfers/rejoiners.
Between 1 January 2008 and 1 January 2009 there were 226 Officers substantively promoted (not temporary/acting promotion).

This information is not held accurately. No information is held in relation to Officers who have classified themselves as Transgender. We only hold information where an officer has chosen to identify themselves as LGB. Therefore, the following information cannot be taken as a representation of total numbers of Lesbian, Gay or Bisexual officers within the force.
