Re: Information request 
 
Thank you for your request to NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) to access information 
regarding blood donations.    
 
I am writing to advise you that we are able to provide the following information in response to 
your request. 
 
1. The exact percentage (%) of whole blood obtained by voluntary donation that is actually 
used for the intended purpose of transfusions.  
The measure that we look at is defined as 'Red Cells banked to Total WB Donors Bled'. The 
annual figure is 95.3%.  
  
2. The exact percentage (%) of donated whole blood that is used for the manufacture of 
blood products (serums etc) for eventual sale to countries other than the UK.  
We do not use any donated whole blood for the manufacture of blood products. 
  
3. Exact details of the countries in which these products are being sold, and exact details of 
the profits gained from their sale.
