Dear Mr Manderson

Request under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Thank you for your email received on 20 July 2009 requesting that the following information be provided to you:

“What funding has been provided by Glasgow Council for the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland?

This should include i) Estimated cost of Policing Parades and ii) Estimated cost of additional street cleaning.”

The Council is treating your request as a request under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

The information which you have requested is as follows:

Glasgow City Council does not provide funding to the Grand Orange Lodge of Glasgow.

The cost of policing parades is a figure which is available annually for all parades which take place in Glasgow. Please note that the Council does not pay the costs of policing parades. These costs are met by Strathclyde Police. For the period 2008-2009, the total cost is £603,676.28. If costs for particular processions are required, these would have to be requested individually giving details of the organisation concerned, dates and routes of the processions.

The Grand Orange Lodge of Glasgow meets the costs involved in cleaning up the park in which events are held, together with the cost of traffic management and health and safety arrangements.

Charges are levied in relation to additional street cleaning whereby Orange Walks take place. As a sample cost, I can advise that the organisers of the Orange Walk, held on 5 July 2008, were charged £2,449.98 for the de-littering and street cleaning undertaken by Glasgow City Council.

The Council accordingly feels that it has complied in full with your request. However, if you feel that this is not the case please contact the Customer Care Team at the number above.
