Dear Mr Connely
Thank you for your enquiry regarding the HPA's expenditure on hardware. Under Section 1 (1) (a) of the Freedom of Information Act, I can confirm that the Health Protection Agency does not hold the information you require in the format requested.
The HPA is a large organisation operating in over 70 sites in the UK, with a diverse range of activities and settings including laboratories, offices and manufacturing. Our finance systems do not hold the information in the format you have requested, so we have tried to provide something which might be of use to you.
The information we have provided is a combination of revenue expenditure held in our Profit and Loss accounts and manual extracts of capital projects which have IT content. A review indicates we have used over 250 suppliers across these types of revenue and capital spend, and only some of these will be hardware (other examples captured under these codes might include maintenance agreements, telecommunications equipment, and equipment associated with laboratory technologies).
Our revenue spend in the financial year 2008/09 on 'Minor Computer Equipment' (which includes hardware) was £2.3m. The top twenty suppliers in this category were:

After a competitive tender process in 2006/07, we have an agreement with Siemens Plc to supply Fujitsu PCs and laptops and Hewlett Packard printers via Tracline (UK) Ltd, and the majority of our desktop hardware is purchased on that agreement.
Our capital spend on 'Information Systems and IT Equipment', which includes hardware, in the financial year 2008/09 was £2.9m. The top twenty suppliers in this category were:
