HELPING TO KEEP Cambridge clean, green and safe
CITY RANGERS NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS   WINTER 08
A FEW WORDS FROM STEVE MAXWELL
CHERRY HINTON, QUEEN
HEAD OF CUSTOMER AND BUSINESS SUPPORT
EDITHS AND TRUMPINGTON
The Rangers continue to maintain vital links with the community
and the recent event in the City Centre to encourage the safe use
of bicycles with colleagues from the Safer Communities Partnership
including the police is an example. This was an opportunity to
remind the community of the importance in having lights on their
bicycles and to be seen by others. As I mentioned in the last
newsletter I considered partnership to be an important element of
how the Ranger Service can be effective and this is a clear
DECEMBER 2008
demonstration of that view.
News and updates from John McAspurn,
the City Ranger for your area.
UPDATE
The last 6 months have been an interesting time around my area and
I am glad to say that most issues I have dealt with have been
successfully completed, with the odd exception. We still deal with
many abandoned vehicles, waste bins left on streets, waste education
visits, derelict/abandoned cycles, hedges/shrubs encroaching public
pathways, fly tipping and street repairs. If you do notice anything like
this, please inform the Customer Service Centre.
This is the third year of the Cherry Hinton Festival and it has grown into
quite an event (see picture to the left). The event now takes up the
majority of the large recreation ground with loads of stalls,
entertainment, food and drink to keep everyone happy. The day was so busy; I gave out around 90 kitchen
caddies and around 40 black and blue recycling boxes, as well as discussing Council services. It is a good
way to liaise with the local community and I’m glad to be a part of such a successful event. I am sure next
years event will be just as successful.
QUEEN EDITH DIRECTORY
There is now a new Queen Ediths Directory that has been delivered to all households in the Queen Ediths
area. If you have not received your directory please call 458282, and we will arrange for you to receive a
copy. It is a very useful publication with important contact details and information of groups and events
around the Queen Ediths area. The directory was created by The St James Community Forum.

TEAM LEADER UPDATE
CHRISTMAS TREES
On behalf of two Residents Associations (Princess &
Hanover Courts and Colville Road Residents Association),
the Ranger service has erected christmas trees at Cherry
Hinton High St and both Hanover and Princess Courts.
Both trees are around 23 feet high with tree lights having to
be attached before raising the tree. I would like to thank
everyone involved for their help; Councillor Dryden,
Hope you’ve all had a nice Christmas and I wish you
electricians Mick and Matt Iwanko, Nigel from Phillimores
all a Happy New Year.
Garden Centre, Caroline Fernandez (Princess/Hanover RA
Representative) and the other Rangers who helped out.
The Rangers motto is to help to keep Cambridge
clean, green and safe and over the past month or so
the City Centre rangers have been concentrating on
the ‘safe’ part by advising some of the local cyclists
of one way systems and of the importance of using
lights.
This doesn’t always tend to receive a friendly
welcome, but the Rangers work with the best
interests of the community at heart and hope that
people can see the benefit of their advice.
WULFSTAN WAY - WORKING WITH THE PROBATION SERVICE
Councillor Heathcock spoke to the Council about local residents concern about a piece of derelict land and
a large hedge bordering Wulfstan Way that was overgrown and felt to be untidy and unsafe. As a joint
working partnership the City Ranger Service, the Probation team and the Housing Officer James Bannister
organised to reduce the large hedge to a manageable size, clear the passage and rear area of derelict land
over a period of 3 days. When you consider that we had approximately 14 Probation workers each day, as
well as the Rangers, the hours involved in this work was massive and the costs would have been
astronomical without the labour being provided by the Probation team. A massive thank you to them for their
efforts!
A FEW FESTIVE DATES...
Friday 5th December was the Christmas tree light switch
on at Cherry Hinton High Street. The 6th December saw
the Anstey Way Christmas Fair and Wednesday 10th was
the Christmas tree light switch on at Princess and
Hanover Courts. All of these festive events went very well
and were attended by lots of people from the local areas.
